Black Canyon of the Gunnison and a trip across Colorado

June 6
This morning we woke to fog and chilly weather.  I'm so glad we found a camp grinder and have had good coffee each morning, especially appreciated  on cool ones like this.  Once we got on the road, we traveled the side roads across the state from Riverside Campground to Friuta.  We crossed two high mountain passes- one over 10,000ft and the just under 12,000.  I've never done that in a car before and it felt kind of like the train at Pikes Peak!!!
We made a couple stops along the way for a snack and a stretch.  Our goal was to get to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.  Totally undervisited park!  It is like a smaller scale, but no less amazing, Grand Canyon.  Huge dark walls shoot up from the Gunnison River, far, far below.  The canyon is about 9 miles wide and an astounding 2,722 ft deep.  WOW!
Tomorrow it is Arches National Park for us.  About 1.5 hours drive from where we are.  Hopefully we can get there early in the day so we can hike before it gets too hot!
