Great Sand Dunes National Park near Alamosa, CO was SOOO cool! It is surreal in this park because you have giant snow topped mountains with huge Sahara-sized sand dunes at the bottom. We crossed the small river and climbed part of the way up the dunes. Two of our teenaged companions decided (against our suggestions ) that crock were the shoes to wear for this climb. Not a great choice when you are crossing blazing hot sand. ANYWAY, we made it 2/3 of the way up the very challenging trudge and then watched Grant climb further up.
This was an amazingly different park and we all highly recommend it if you ever find yourself in the area. Even the two with the toasted toes said it was worthwhile!
