Our campsite tonight was unbelievable. We were on a large lake across from the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This park sits in a bowl-like valley completely surrounded by mountains. We had the Sangre de Cristo to our east and the San Juan to our west. Snow topped mountains, lake and desert shrubs surrounded us. It felt as if we were looking at and living within a painting for the night. For a while, we watched some storms dance around on the mountain tops to our north and attempt to make their way to us. They parted and we just got to see the lightning, hear a little thunder, and feel the winds pick up.
The stars were phenomenally bright as the sky darkened and what a magnificent view we saw.
Sleeping was interesting because as we tried to get to sleep, the winds picked up and shook the fly on the tent like mad. It felt and sounded like being inside a parachute when you are shaking it with kids... On the plus side, once the winds subsided, we were treated to the sound of insects and night creatures making their noise. It was really cool because though the noises were similar to home, the sound was different. Kind of like listening to a familiar song, but in a different key. Our alarm clock early this morning was coyotes calling to each other. Close enough to hear, but not so close that we felt they were just outside our tents. Just right and a lovely night.
